Low Gas Pressure and Load Management: Why It Happens and What Helps
Why pressure collapses at 7 PM in winter, the difference between load management and a fault at your own meter, and the practical fixes that work in a low-pressure area.
There is a particular winter evening experience familiar to most households in Sindh and Balochistan: a flame that barely lifts off the burner, a geyser that will not fire, and rice that takes an hour. By ten o'clock everything works normally again.
That is load management, and understanding it does two useful things. It tells you what is worth complaining about and what is not. And it tells you which practical changes actually help, as opposed to the ones that just feel productive.
Why pressure drops
A gas distribution network is a pipe with a finite carrying capacity, fed at a finite rate. Pressure at your appliance is what is left after everyone upstream of you has taken what they are taking.
Four things stack up:
Demand peaks are extremely sharp. Most of a city cooks at roughly the same times and showers at roughly the same times. Between about 6 and 9 in the morning and 6 and 9 in the evening, the network is asked for far more than at any other hour.
Winter multiplies the peak. Water heating is the biggest single domestic gas load, and it is much more demanding in winter because the incoming water is colder. Add space heating on top and the winter evening peak is in a different league from a summer one.
You may be far along the line. Pressure falls with distance from the feed and with elevation. A house at the end of a long distribution run, or on an upper floor, or at the top of a slope, gets what is left after everyone before it.
Capacity is fixed in the short term. Reinforcing a network is a planning and construction exercise, not something that responds to today's cold snap.
Faced with a peak beyond capacity, the operator manages load — prioritising across sectors and areas so the whole system does not lose pressure. The visible result at your burner is a weak flame at 7 PM.
Load management or a problem at your house?
This is the question that decides whether complaining is worth your time, and there is a clean test.
It is system-wide load management if:
- Neighbours have it at the same time.
- It follows the clock — bad at peak hours, fine at midnight.
- It is much worse in winter than in summer.
- All your gas appliances are weak simultaneously.
It is a problem on your side if:
- Neighbours are fine while you are not.
- It happens at odd hours with no pattern.
- One appliance is weak and the others are normal.
- It has been getting steadily worse over months rather than seasonally.
- It started immediately after building work, a repair, or an appliance being installed.
The five-minute diagnostic
Ask two neighbours whether their gas is weak right now. That single question separates a network issue from a house issue faster than anything else, and it determines whether the right next step is a complaint or a look at your own installation.
If it is a problem at your house
Work through these in order:
One weak appliance, others fine. The fault is at that appliance — blocked burner ports, a kinked or partially collapsed hose, a valve not fully open, or a clogged jet. Clean the burner and check the hose along its whole length.
Everything weak, neighbours fine. Suspect the regulator or the supply into the property. Regulators have a service life and a failing one restricts flow. This is not a self-repair job.
Weak since building work. A pipe crushed, kinked or partially blocked during construction is a common cause, and it is why enclosing gas pipework in new masonry is such a bad idea.
Weak and worsening over months. Possible partial blockage or corrosion in the supply line. Report it.
Weak plus a smell of gas. Stop. This is an emergency, not a pressure issue — leave and call 1199. The gas leak guide has the immediate steps.
Anything involving pipework or the regulator goes through the formal complaint process or a competent fitter, not a spanner.
What actually helps in a low-pressure area
You cannot add pressure to the network. What you can do is stop competing with the peak.
Shift your cooking. The single most effective change. Cooking at 5 PM or after 9 PM instead of at 7 PM transforms what is possible on the same connection. In practical terms this often means preparing the evening meal earlier and reheating.
Cook once, use twice. A dish cooked outside the peak and reheated later takes far less gas at 7 PM than one cooked from raw at 7 PM.
Use a pressure cooker. It is the ideal appliance for a weak flame, because it needs less sustained heat to achieve the same result. For dals, meat and rice it also cuts total gas consumption substantially, which helps the bill as well as the evening.
Lids on everything. An uncovered pan on a weak flame may never reach a boil at all. With a lid it will.
Fill the geyser outside peak hours. Heat water at 11 PM or 5 AM and use it later. An insulated geyser holds heat for hours, so this is genuinely practical rather than theoretical.
Do not run two large appliances at once. Geyser and cooker simultaneously at 7 PM means neither performs.
Insulate the geyser and its pipes. Less reheating means less demand at exactly the wrong time.
Get an appliance suited to low pressure. Where the problem is chronic and structural, appliances designed for lower pressure operation are a real option worth asking a dealer about.

Does low pressure affect the bill?
The meter measures gas that passes through it, so low pressure does not inflate readings. Gas that never arrives is not billed.
But there are two real effects, in opposite directions:
Upward: appliances working against a weak flame run longer to achieve the same outcome — a pot that takes forty minutes instead of twenty-five is consuming gas for that whole time. In a household that cooks entirely during peak hours, this is a measurable increase.
Downward: in a severe shortage where the geyser will not fire at all, consumption genuinely falls, because gas was not delivered.

Complaining about pressure effectively
For system-wide load management at peak hours in winter, an individual complaint will not restore pressure — the constraint is capacity, and the answer will say so.
Where a complaint is worth making:
- Pressure is poor at your address but fine for neighbours — that is a fault, not load management.
- Pressure has deteriorated permanently rather than seasonally.
- The area has become chronically low-pressure over months or years, in which case a collective, written complaint from the street is the version that carries weight. Many signatures on one document about one area is a different input from many individual phone calls.
- You suspect a leak or damaged main near you, which is urgent regardless of pressure.
Make it in writing, at your zone office, with dates and times of the worst periods recorded over a couple of weeks. A log showing "no usable pressure between 6:45 and 8:30 PM on these fourteen dates" is evidence. "The gas is always weak" is not.
